Choosing a car for taxi work is one of the most important decisions you'll make - it directly impacts your earnings. Fuel consumption, passenger comfort, maintenance costs - all of these determine your net profit at the end of the week. Let's figure out what to pay attention to when choosing a vehicle.
Hybrid or Gasoline?
This is the first and most important question. In Poland, most experienced taxi drivers have already switched to hybrids, and here's why:
- Fuel consumption. In city driving, a hybrid consumes 4-5 L/100 km vs. 7-9 L for a gasoline car. At 200-300 km per day, that's savings of 500-800 zloty per month on fuel alone.
- Brake pads. Regenerative braking reduces brake pad wear by 2-3 times. Lower maintenance costs.
- Comfort. Hybrids run quieter and accelerate more smoothly. Passengers will appreciate it.
- Hybrid downsides. Higher initial cost, battery replacement after 150-200K km (1500-3000 EUR), slightly more expensive insurance.
Bottom line: if you plan to work more than 6 months, a hybrid will pay for itself. For a short period, a gasoline car will work too.
Best Models for Taxi in Poland
Based on our fleet's experience with 400+ vehicles, here are the models that show the best balance of cost and reliability:
Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The most popular choice. Fuel consumption 4.2 L/100 km in the city, reliable CVT transmission, spacious interior. Parts are available everywhere. Optimal mileage when buying used: 50-100K km.
Toyota Prius (20/30/50)
A taxi classic worldwide. Prius 20 is a budget option but aging. Prius 50 is modern with 3.5-4 L/100 km consumption. Pay attention to battery condition when buying used.
Skoda Octavia
If a hybrid doesn't suit you - Octavia with 1.4 TSI or 1.6 TDI engine. Large trunk (important for airport trips), mechanically reliable, cheap parts in Poland.
Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid
A Toyota alternative with lower used market prices. Fuel consumption 4-4.5 L/100 km, good equipment, 5-year warranty on new vehicles.
New or Used?
For taxi work, a used car is the more rational choice. A new car loses 20-30% of its value in the first year. Optimal option: 2-4 year old car with 50-120K km from the first owner.
What to look for when buying used:
- Service history (ASO or authorized service)
- No accidents (check via historiapojazdu.gov.pl)
- Hybrid battery condition (test at service)
- Actual mileage (verify with CEPiK database)
- A set of winter tires (not legally required in Poland but essential)
Platform Requirements for Vehicles
Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow have their own vehicle requirements:
- Car age: no older than 10-12 years (depends on city and platform)
- Minimum 4 doors
- Working air conditioning
- Clean interior without damage
- Valid technical inspection and OC insurance
How Much Does It Cost to Maintain a Taxi Car?
Approximate monthly costs for a hybrid (Toyota Corolla, ~5,000 km/month mileage):
- Fuel: 800-1200 zl
- OC/AC insurance: 200-350 zl
- Maintenance (oil, filters, pads): 150-300 zl
- Car wash: 100-200 zl
- Tires (depreciation): 50-100 zl
- Total: 1300-2150 zl/month
