ZUS (Zaklad Ubezpieczen Spolecznych) is Poland's social insurance system. If you work as a sole proprietor (jednoosobowa dzialalnosc gospodarcza), you are required to pay ZUS contributions. For taxi drivers, this is one of the major expenses, so it's important to understand how much you need to pay and what benefits are available.
What's Included in ZUS?
Monthly ZUS contributions for sole proprietors include several components:
- Ubezpieczenie emerytalne (retirement) - 19.52% of base
- Ubezpieczenie rentowe (disability) - 8% of base
- Ubezpieczenie wypadkowe (accident insurance) - 1.67%
- Ubezpieczenie chorobowe (sickness, voluntary) - 2.45%
- Fundusz Pracy (labor fund) - 2.45%
- Skladka zdrowotna (health insurance) - calculated separately
How Much to Pay in 2026?
The amount of contributions depends on which benefits you are using:
Ulga na start (First 6 Months)
New sole proprietors in their first 6 months pay only the health insurance contribution (skladka zdrowotna). This is approximately 380-420 zl per month depending on the tax form. Social contributions are 0 zl.
Conditions: You are opening a sole proprietorship for the first time or at least 60 months have passed since closing the previous one.
Preferencyjna skladka (Months 7-30)
After Ulga na start ends, you move to the preferential rate - 30% of minimum wage. In 2026, this means:
- Social contributions: ~420-450 zl/month
- Health insurance: ~380-420 zl/month
- Total: ~800-870 zl/month
Full ZUS (After 30 Months)
Standard rate - 60% of average salary. In 2026:
- Social contributions: ~1150-1250 zl/month
- Health insurance: ~380-420 zl/month
- Total: ~1530-1670 zl/month
Health Insurance - How to Calculate?
Since 2022, the amount of skladka zdrowotna depends on your tax form:
- Ryczalt (flat rate) - fixed amount, depends on annual income. For most drivers: 380-420 zl/month
- Skala podatkowa (general scale 12%/32%) - 9% of income
- Podatek liniowy (linear 19%) - 4.9% of income
For taxi drivers, the ryczalt system at 8.5% of turnover is usually most advantageous. With this system, health insurance is fixed and predictable.
What Happens if You Don't Pay ZUS?
The consequences are serious:
- Penalties (odsetki) - accrued daily for each day of delay
- Forced collection through a court bailiff (komornik)
- Loss of right to sick leave and medical care
- Problems renewing your residence card - ZUS debt can be grounds for refusal
Practical Tips
- Pay on time. Deadline is the 20th of each month. Set up automatic payment in your bank.
- Use all available benefits. 6 months without social contributions + 24 months of preferential rates - this saves you 20-30 thousand zl over 2.5 years.
- Keep track of declarations. You need to submit DRA or RCA through the ZUS PUE portal every month.
- Voluntary sickness insurance. If you pay the sickness contribution (chorobowe) for at least 90 days - you get the right to paid sick leave. For taxi drivers, this is insurance for illness or injury.
ZUS When Working Through a Partner
If you work through Optima Partner under a 0% VAT model - you are registered as a partner, not as an employee. This means you pay ZUS yourself as a sole proprietor. However, our accounting team handles contribution calculations, declaration preparation, and payment deadline management. You don't need to figure out the details on your own - we'll advise you on the optimal scheme and ensure everything is paid on time.
